GIANT
New paintings by Anne-Marie Cosgrove

Opening Reception: 2 - 5 pm on Saturday, August 26th, 2017

The inaugural exhibition GIANT consists of new large scale paintings by Anne-Marie Cosgrove. Conceptually based, the works began from the artists chance encounter with birch trees deformed by graffiti. The trees had integrated the graffiti into new forms of growth and had survived nonetheless. The metaphor that took hold was one of coexistence within the density of an urban environment. Describing the context of her artistic production, Anne-Marie states “it’s not about a studio practice - it’s about myself as an artist and what I can do - about how I adapt to new situations and what I can create out of that”.

The paintings in GIANT present large, immediate gestures in the form of oversize brushstrokes that cover and reveal underpainting and overpainting. Integrated within these works are suggestions of narrative, from both the use of titles and the descriptive mark-making within the works. The gestural marks can be described equally as displacements, abundant, super-abundant, homogenous, different, dense, opaque, clustering, strong and rhythmic.

Born in Montréal, Anne-Marie has exhibited her paintings nationally and internationally in Venice, New York, Miami, Seattle, Vancouver, Montréal, Toronto, Washington D.C. and elsewhere. Recent exhibitions include Differences on Identity: Artistic Perspectives, Sale del Portale, San Lorenzo, Venice (Italy); Continuation, Red Head Gallery, Toronto and Writing On The Wall, The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. Multiple awards include the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. Her work has been reviewed in Canada and the US in publications such as Vanguard Magazine; Matriart: A Canadian Feminist Art Journal; ArtWord: Artists Forum and numerous on-line publications. Anne-Marie has a MFA from York University in Toronto and a BFA from Concordia University in Montréal. Anne-Marie currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
